Time project #5

Despite the experimentation, we did with light and the acrylic box we decided not to proceed with that idea. There was a lot of complication in producing a functional product and it visibly having a relationship to time.

Both Tyler and I, researched for some design inspiration and came across Chris Clavio, who did a projection mapping of rectangles changing over time. Using his idea, we wanted to also rectangles that could increase in size to represent that as there are more hours in a day there is more you can do but that is not an actual case. People usually have less time in a day as time flies by. We chose to go from 24 squares each rectangle coloured based on the colour of the sky. But, as I discussed the idea with Oliver the interaction of someone standing in the box for 24 hours to see the complete cycle seemed pointless. Therefore we transitioned from a 24-hour clock to a timer where for example a timer for a minute could have 12 rectangles that lasted 5 seconds each. But, when thinking of what context it could be used in we only thought of entertainment. Resulting in us changing our idea once again. We also went from rectangles to circles as we felt that the user would feel more comfortable as they would not sense the pressure as much even though we want them to sense the pressure of time.

Using the design above we created a prototype using a magic whiteboard paper roll and tape. However, in doing the prototype it made us realise that why should someone wait 24 hours for them to see the progression of time passing so we had to change our concept.

Using Adobe Illustrator and After Effects, both Tyler and I created three variations of our design. The first one presented above before the prototype model followed by circles getting smaller within each time over time and lastly a circle timer. For the other two, we took some footage of which is displayed below.

After having done photoshoot recording a person within the circles we noticed the problem with the circles getting smaller. Such as, the user could be covering part of the projector, and depending on the person’s shoe size the smaller circles would go over the user’s foot. Therefore, we changed it into an envolving gradient circle with a timer.

A context this would be used it would be an office where if someone was to be working an 8-hour shift the circle would go around the employee and if they were to stay for longer than data would be recorded and the colour of the circle would change. Unfortunately, by doing this there would be many ethical issues as well as micromanaging happening as a result of this.
