Letterpress workshop

This week we had an induction on letter pressing. The process began with us deciding which typography we wanted to use and afterwards placing are chosen block letters onto a plate. In order for us to place them into fixed positions, we had to use furniture but had to measure the width of are words to use the correct furniture. Once the letters were placed into a position we inked the letters and placed a piece of paper above them. Then, pulled the roller of the letter pressing machine across and above the paper until a loud click sound was made. After printing, we had to clean the letters using vinyl.  Finally, we got to experiment by using tape to create different textures.

Whilst doing this process I came across a couple issues. Such as, using the right sized furniture and having enough furniture so the letters wouldn’t move. Another problem I faced was using the roller because there were a couple of times where I would roll and then the paper would roll into another roller and the whole paper would be inked. However, the overall process was enjoyable but it was just a time-consuming process especially to get a good print.
