Birds exhibit

IMG_1792-2.jpg

In the former Newington library, there was an exhibit on natural selection presented by Andy Holden & Peter Holden. Peter Holden was the father of Andy Holden, he inspired his son to follow in his footsteps in his passion for birds. In the exhibition, they were presenting videos, structures of birds nests as well as birds eggs.

On the ground floor, there was a presentation of a variety of nests ranging from different birds alongside works of other artists. In comparison to the basement, where there were boxes of eggs this ‘[considered]the psychology of collecting and how the desire to possess something rare can sometimes have terrible consequences for the thing collected'(referenced from brochure of exhibit).

Personally, I would not have gone to this exhibition as this is not an area of my interest or has any relevance to do with my studies. But, since we were asked to visit it by our lecturer and it wasn’t far from where I live I just decided to go. One piece that really blew me away was the bowerbird pictured below.I was fascinated by the way the sticks were intertwined with each other and the presence of the rich brown tones. Even though it appears to be a nest where birds would lay their eggs, it actually is an area for a courtship ritual. ‘ In the hope of attracting a mate, the male bird carefully arranges objects around the bower, guided by considerations of shape and colour.’ (referenced from the booklet provided for the exhibit).
