Overview: To consider areas of concern about the application of AI-powered systems in circumstances affecting human life, and to identify one that can be communicated or resolved using an interactive prototype.

Context: As we seek innovation, we have been creating systems that are increasingly dependent on being powered by AI systems, making decisions without any human judgement only with the code that gives it the basis for dictating decisions. While machines are often supposed to be neutral, the biases of their creators may reflect and amplify existing cultural prejudices and inequalities. Those artificial intelligence applications are already being used in the real world by law enforcement agencies as well as in the business sector. There may be significant harm to individuals that may go unnoticed and uncorrected until it’s too late.

Research: Primary research would include evaluating current AI systems, and secondary research would include reading about artificial intelligence. Where are the problems?

Form: An immersive user interface that tackles a group of people affected by an AI problem. In your final outcome please consider all parties. To do so, research your demographics, select a specific location and ensure that this information solves the problem. Your result may be speculative but it should be feasible as it will be based on real-world issues. The result could be digital, perhaps in the form of a website or app, or physical.

Scope: 6 weeks

Tools and methods: You should include evidence of your problems and solutions in the form of mock-ups, blog posts and any other relevant medium at different stages of your research progression and convey your ideas. To create a more holistic and multidisciplinary project, you may explore collaborative opportunities with students from other disciplines.
