The Sudanese women’s national dress had emerged in the 1800s, it was called the tobe. The national dress symbolised womanhood, socioeconomic status but also served as  a platform for women to express their political views when silenced. Women strategically and creatively named new styles of the tobe to enter political and social conversations within Sudan and the world. Then as now, the tobe’s ability to carry multiple messages has made it a vital instrument in women’s activism. This project explores how political conversations can be conveyed through clothing and the revolution that brought a major shift of political power in Sudan that started with street protests throughout Sudan from 19 December 2018, until late 2019. Due to the current outbreak, the Sudanese economy is suffering, people are breaking their silence again using the #standforsudan.

This is an art gallery mockup to show videos of a projection of the website and tobes designed over a revolutionary period: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1_fIrpVyttGwNvBhdKu1b488ERRn-shgs?usp=sharing

For the mockup of the art gallery, I made three versions presenting each of the tobes from the video but I couldn’t decide which one to use. Therefore, I posted it on instagram and ask people to rate each image. The problem with the results was that I didn’t have an equal number of people seeing each picture but I was able to recognise which was the least liked. I rationalised my decision by using the one that would be shown at the beginning of the video.

I took inspiration from brochures of old V&A exhibits and designed it with the identifiable blue that is like when people on social media turned their profile pictures blue to stand in solidarity with Sudan and raise awareness of the uprising. The brochure would explain about the exhibit, have the poem from the website written side by side in both English and Arabic for someone to read the poem at their own pace and display a close up of the material in the order in which they were designed.

The hardest and longest part was rendering the videos.
