Data for change #4

On April 15th, we had a workshop with Tiziana Alocci: Data Visualisation. Choosing Metaphors and telling stories. Alocci presented to us different data visualisations as well as sources we could use to present our data. Later into the session, she explained how she gets inspired by metaphors which drive the project she does, creating an engaging narrative with the user.

From the session, I realised the importance of storytelling, especially when doing the activity. Kristina and I looked through the data set we were given and decided to create a storyline about the female astronauts using the statistics. We constructed it in the order of beginning with the progression over time of female astronauts, to inspiring the user with the number of hours in space increasing over time and telling the user how they could become an astronaut with the data given of the degrees existing astronauts had. We drew sketches of a mobile website but presented the data set differently from each other. starting off with a movable horizontal scale over time, to a visualisation over time going vertically with visuals of space so the user could scroll lastly a typographic data visual where the degrees were written but sized based on the popularity but looking like a flag on a planet.
